Views From the Hot Tub
The placement of the hot tub allows it to be a part of the party while in use, but hidden when not. It's framed on two sides with tempered glass to allow for views of the city; the third side is framed with ipe stairs, and the outward-facing side is screened with a planter box filled with perennial grasses and boxwoods. Building Green
One of the eco-friendly elements of HGTV Green Home 2012 is the barbecue courtyard. Born of architect Steve Kemp's vision for a truly green design, the outdoor space replaces the conventional backyard, which would have required major regrading of the site and the construction of retaining walls. "Now the 'yard' is open to almost every room in the house, rather than being open to one or two rooms," he says.
An Uncommon Fun Space
In this small urban courtyard space, Jamie Durie designed a gathering spot for the entire apartment complex to enjoy. Bench seating is supplemented by lounge chairs that pop up out of the floor, providing plenty of space for viewing the movie screen.
